Meeting The Governor

I had met a governor once before in my life, when I was younger and still lived in New Jersey. By "met" I more accurately might say "quickly shook hands with in a crowded room"- an experience which, in New Jersey, qualifies as having done pretty well for getting to know your government. I'll spare you the story of the time I attempted to actually meet my local representative at the Statehouse in Trenton, but suffice it to say that New Jersey’s government is not quite as available to the public as Vermont's.

Puppets Appeal for Funding

Though usually led by a religious figure, last Wednesday's devotion reading on the house floor was conducted by two puppets from Puppets in Education (PiE), a not-for-profit that's been serving Vermont's youth since 1982. The "Kids on the Block" work with children grades K-8 on social and safety issues, physical and mental health, and on celebrating individual differences. While some in the house grumbled about an affront to decorum, most enjoyed the puppet's performance- which included a plea for help in troubling times for organizations like PiE.

The 120-Day Irene Recovery Report

Irene Recovery Report Jan 2012

The Irene Recovery Coordination Team (IRCT) recently released it's 120-day report on the progress made recovering from the worst storm to hit Vermont in nearly a century, and it's definitely worth the read. The storm brought tragedy, as we all know, but also served to illuminate the courage and wherewithal of Vermonters- and showed the rest of the country what Vermont Strong really means.
